Before You Hire
What to Check Before Hiring a Sidewalk Contractor in NYC
These are the licenses, insurance and permits New York City requires for sidewalk work. Ask any contractor for them, including us, and check them with the agency that issues them.
-
A Home Improvement Contractor license
NYC DCWP requires one for residential work over $200, including sidewalks, driveways and patios. Look the number up before you sign.
DCWP License Search -
Liability insurance and workers’ comp
DOT will not issue a sidewalk permit to a contractor without at least $1,000,000 in liability coverage per occurrence and a workers’ compensation certificate.
General Conditions for All Permits -
A DOT sidewalk construction permit
Required for repairs over 25 square feet and for any repair that clears a violation. The permit number belongs on your paperwork.
Sidewalk Construction Permit -
A Parks permit near street trees
Work next to a street tree needs a Parks Tree Work Permit, and the City no longer allows cutting the roots of City trees.
Trees and Sidewalks Repair -
Work built to the DOT standard
4 inches of air-entrained concrete on a 6-inch base, 7 inches at driveways, with expansion joints at about 20-foot intervals.
Standard Highway Specifications (2022) -
A dismissal inspection at the end
Repairing a violation is not the last step. A dismissal inspection has to be requested through 311 before the City confirms the repair.
